Franklin Kasumba

Franklin is a Kampala-based architectural practitioner, researcher and photographer working in architectural and urban landscape photography. He uses photography as a tool to document and offer fresh perspectives on the built environment and the cultural character of urban spaces across East Africa.

 

He has contributed to both local and international publications, including Anza Magazine (a magazine that covered stories of the built environment in East Africa), the Architecture Uganda Journal (a publication of the Uganda Society of Architects) and Domus 1088 (an international architecture magazine based in Milan, Italy). Together with DARCH (Dar es Salaam Centre for Architectural Heritage), he has contributed to the permanent exhibition that is displayed at the Old Boma, the oldest building in Dar es Salaam. His research has been used in developing a Conservation Management Plan for the Uganda Museum under the Keeping-It-Modern project of the Getty Foundation.

 

Franklin is passionate about African modernism which he continues to research and document through photography, writing, and urban tours.
